In addition to providing group, individual, and family therapy for victims and their families, ChildSafe's trained therapists collaborate with human services and criminal justice organizations on child sexual abuse cases. They regularly instruct or attend continuing education in their specialties and offer professional consultation and expert testimony in court cases involving child sexual abuse.
ChildSafe also serves as a training center for professionals who seek expertise in treating child sexual abuse. We offer an intern program for graduate students from local universities, and an extern program to supervise graduates working toward their licenses.
Before being hired as the Executive Director of ChildSafe, Lisa Poppaw spent several years volunteering and working for nonprofits, most recently as the Northern Colorado Regional Director at Manufacturer's Edge, and prior to that as the Executive Director of the Foundation on Aging for Larimer County. She served eight years on the Fort Collins City Council and was a member of the Poudre Fire Authority board of directors, the Fort Collins Housing Authority board of commissioners, the Legislative Review Committee, and the Ethics Review Board for the City. She has her bachelor's degree in English and is currently enrolled in the Executive Masters of Public Administration program at the University of Colorado, Denver.
Meet our therapists!
Val has been a therapist with ChildSafe since 1986 and is a co-founder of ChildSafe. She specializes in play therapy for children who have been sexually abused, and in the treatment of non-offending parents. Val is also ChildSafe's Clinical Director and she supervises and trains staff therapists, plans and coordinates therapy programs, and conducts new client intakes.
On Friday, September 20, 2013 Executive Director Valerie Macri-Lind was honored as the recipient of the Norma Anderson Excellence Award for 2013. Presented by the State of Colorado Division of Criminal Justice Sex Offender Management Award, this award recognizes Val's lifelong commitment to treating sexually abused children
In April 2011, Val was honored as a recipient of the District Attorney's Victim Service Award of Distinction. She won in the category of Field Practitioners who develop and implement innovative victim service programs and projects. The award "Recognizes an individual or organization that has clearly brought 'new and improved' programs, services, delivery methods or other innovation to enhance victim services for the citizens of Larimer or Jackson Counties."
Marian has been a therapist with ChildSafe since 1998. She specializes in therapy for adolescents who have been sexually abused, non-offending parents of abuse victims, and adults abused as children. She has many previous years of experience teaching adolescents and helping at-risk students.
Kristin is a Colorado native who received her Master's degree in clinical counseling from the University of Northern Colorado in 2014. Kristin is a licensed professional counselor and is passionate about working with young children through play therapy. She is also a Neurofeedback practitioner and helps co-facilitate the elementary and middle school girls groups.
Sandi has been with ChildSafe since 2011; she graduated from Regis University with specialized training in children and adolescent counseling. She is a nationally certified counselor and trained in EMDR. Although she works with all populations, her clinical focus largely involves "tweens", adolescents, and young adults. She also co-facilitates the adolescent girls' group.
Melissa earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Colorado State University in 2010. She earned her Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University in 2015. She has a professional background in working with children and teens who have experienced trauma. She also has experience working closely with caregivers to help their children heal. Melissa is EMDR trained and is a Neurofeedback practitioner. She is trained in CBT, play therapy, DBT, and sand tray therapy. She also co-facilitates the Caregivers' Group and often teaches the Parenting Class.
Mila joined ChildSafe in 2016. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology from University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master’s degree in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling from Northeastern Illinois University, where she also completed the Family Therapy program. Mila is a nationally certified counselor and trained in EMDR, CBT, ACT, SFBT, as well as art and play therapy. She provides counseling services for children, adolescents and adults.
Maggie earned her Bachelors degree in Latin American Studies and Spanish Language from the University of Kansas in 2008 and her Masters in Mindfulness-Based Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from Naropa University in 2016. She starting working in the field of psychology in 2006 as a volunteer counselor at a suicide prevention center in Lawrence, KS and has since worked in a variety of settings including a residential facility for teens, a homeless shelter for the undocumented population in El Paso, Texas, as a bereavement counselor at a hospice, and with children, teens and adults in a private practice setting. Maggie works with people of all ages who have experienced trauma and is passionate about creating a safe, non-judgmental space for all her clients in which healing and growth can occur. Maggie is currently a registered psychotherapist in the state of Colorado.
Brian has his BA in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado and his MA in Counseling from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg VA. Brian recently moved back to Colorado after working as a counselor in Virginia for seven years. Brian has worked extensively with at-risk children, teens, and families. Brian also has experience with bereavement counseling, attachment based therapy, and psycho-education.

Prior to his position as the Business Operations Manager with ChildSafe, Tim Alexander served as the Operations Director at EPIC Behavioral Healthcare in St. Augustine, FL. His 13 years there included managing the Administration functions of the counseling center, Information Technology, Electronic Health Records, Facilities, Data and Outcome management systems, Process Improvement, Policies and Procedures, Utilization Review, and Health & Safety. He has a combined 19 years experience in the business and faith-based community.
As ChildSafe's Billing Specialist & Office Assistant, Lindsey assists our clients with their billing and patient service needs. She corresponds with our clients' insurance companies, state agencies, and Victim's Compensation to ensure that they receive the quality care and services that ChildSafe has to offer. She also helps with event planning and fundraising efforts.
